Shortly before the arrival of Season 22 of Apex Legends, Electronic Arts announced a comprehensive restructuring of the Apex Legends Battle Passes, which now abandons the option to acquire them with in-game currency.
In a new blog post Officially, EA says that “the decision to move from AC currency to real-world currency is not one we have made lightly.” It also claims that “it allows us to reduce the price of Premium+ for our community.”
The new real-world currency pricing option for the Premium track will be $9.99 USD. The new Premium+ track will cost $19.99 USD.
Previously, players might use Apex Coins (AC) to purchase Battle Passes each season. They might also earn enough Apex Coins in one season to pay for the next. Apex Legends Battle Passes will also be split into one for each seasonal split. As a result, EA plans to reduce the level required to earn all rewards, from 110 to 60.
This change in Apex Legends was not so well received by the players
With this move, EA says the change “allows us to more closely align seasonal progression with ranked play while increasing the value of your time.” It also means players will need to spend real money to get a new Battle Pass in each division.
However, judging by the social media reactions to the announcement, the move is being overwhelmingly criticised by gamers, with many suggesting it is just a cynical attempt to rip off consumers in the face of declining returns for the free-to-play game, which launched in February 2019.
“I am normally positive, but this is just disappointing,” wrote a fan of the game. “They have one of the best shooters at their core with an amazing community, and yet they keep slowly creeping up.
“A huge L”, wrote another X user in response to today’s news. “You can no longer buy them with Apex Coins and there are 2 battle passes per season. Basically the price of the battle pass has been doubled AND it doesn’t allow you to buy future battle passes with Apex Coins beyond the current one. Possibly the biggest L I’ve seen in Apex to date.”
Others simply took advantage of the moment to make memes related to the topic.
However, EA noted in the blog post that “this announcement may change as we listen to community feedback and continue to develop and evolve our Live Service and Content.” This means that this change may not be final following the negative response from Apex players.
