This year once more, E3, one of the most famous video game fairs, has been – once more – canceled, a sign that it might be time to say goodbye to it definitively. But how might an event that was considered a monument fall from its pedestal and was it foreseeable? In this new JV legends, we retrace the history of this mythical salon.

The forced union

E3 was the unmissable event for any video game fan. For several days and nights, the most eminent publishers in the profession gather around several conferences to announce their future titles; among them: PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, Bethesda, Ubisoft etc… A year before its creation in 1995, it was the beginnings of 3D on home consoles, the PlayStation was to be released, the Saturn too, Nintendo said goodbye to Super NES, as for the PC, it prepares the arrival of Windows 95 which promises new generation gaming thanks to DirectX. The video game industry is booming and changing extremely fast. We explain the situation better in the video at the top of the article. It is in this context that the ESA (the association of game publishers) was created, which will be responsible for regulating video games, in particular through age categories.. And to give publishers legitimacy, it created the Electronic Entertainment Exposition, E3, which was a success.

The “almost death” of E3

For years, E3 has shaped the market, shaped the practices, and sculpted the lore of modern gaming. However, what the show had not foreseen was the democratization of the Internet. More and more people prefer to stay at home and leave E3 to the media and bloggers who take care of broadcasting the event to them. In addition, some are beginning to complain regarding the exorbitant prices that exhibitors pay for their locations. So in 2007 the formula changed, the show moved from Los Angeles to Santa Monica and it was just a meeting place between publishers and the press. Farewell audience.

Needless to say, it didn’t work. In 2008, for its return to the city of angels, E3 achieved its lowest attendance record: in 3 years, we went from 70,000 people, an absolute record, to 5,000 participants. never really picked up as publishers started creating their own shows and the advent of Twitch and YouTube pushed the conference into the grave. In 2020, it’s a crushing blow since the covid 19 pandemic hits the convention, which can no longer open its doors.. It is canceled for the first time, but will not recover. It has already been replaced by the Summer Game Fest, an entirely remote show more suited to modern practices.
