Canadian biologists have established that prolonged consumption of food containing the popular dye E129 promotes the appearance of mild forms of colitis. This was announced on Tuesday by the press service of McMaster Universityreferring to an article published in the journal Nature Communications.
“Our experiments showed that the dye E129 negatively influences the health of the digestive tract, and revealed its mechanism related to the presence of serotonin molecules in the intestine. This information will allow us to develop new approaches to the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation of the intestine.“, said the professor of the university Waliul Khanquoted by the press service of the establishment.
Today there are several chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as crohn’s disease or the ulcerative colitis who still remain without effective treatment methods. Many of these diseases have a genetic origin, but researchers have discovered a large number of facts confirming that they are provoked and accentuated by certain elements of the microflora.
Thus, Waliul Khan and his colleagues established that the popular red dye E129 actively promotes the development of some forms of these diseases. The aforementioned substance is used in particular in the production of beverages, caramel, confectionery, children’s medicines and cosmetics. (Tass)
