His scooter might travel up to 100 kilometers per hour, so the young driver would have needed a driving license of at least class A1, the state police department announced on Tuesday. He also illegally had a passenger with him during the check on Easter Sunday. Furthermore, there was no approval for the large scooter.

Registration and insurance required

According to the law, “small and mini scooters” only include scooters that have a design speed of a maximum of 25 kilometers per hour and an output of a maximum of 600 watts. The same regulations apply to these as to bicycles. Larger scooters may only be driven with a driving licence, and registration and liability insurance must also be available.

Further travel is prohibited

The A1 driving license category includes, among other things, motorcycles with a displacement of up to 125 cubic centimeters and an engine power of up to 11 kW (light motorcycles). The 18-year-old, who according to the police was driving “at a rapid speed” on Münzgrabenstrasse in Graz, was banned from continuing his journey.
