E-offensive at Renault: With electricity, but affordable

2023-11-30 23:00:00

Renault is putting the pedal to the metal with small, affordable electric cars. The electric Twingo should cost less than 20,000 euros.

When Luca de Meo steps on stage, everyone gets their money’s worth. The audience because the Renault CEO always has something to say. The journalists because the Milan native never misses an opportunity for a strong headline. And last but not least, the just over 105,000 employees of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Since the now 56-year-old top manager with a Volkswagen past climbed to the top of what is currently the third-largest car manufacturer in July 2020, hardly a stone has been left unturned at the previously moribund French traditional brand.

With Ampere, Renault is clearly focusing on e-mobility

While some competitors are still struggling to come up with a clear plan for the drive change that has long been underway, the French are placing a clear focus on the topic of e-mobility. The long-term strategy also has a name with the company Ampere, which was officially formed on November 1st. The main task of the group, which has generous capital resources and is expected to be listed on the stock exchange by mid-2024 at the latest, is to bring compact and, above all, affordable electric cars onto the market.

Renault electric cars: low price and extremely low standard consumption

Specifically, the roadmap calls for reducing the list prices for electric vehicles by 40 percent. By 2027/28 at the latest, the electricity-powered models of the core brand Renault should be priced at the same level as those with combustion engines. In addition to the low purchase price, Renault promises an extremely low standard consumption of ten kWh per 100 kilometers. According to de Meo’s ambitious plans, around one million electric vehicles will be produced annually by 2031.

With electric drive by 2026: Megane, Scenic, Renault 5, Renault 4 and Twingo

The Megane E-Tech Electric, which was presented in mid-2022 and has an entry-level price, is currently Renault’s spearhead in the segment of electricity-powered volume models. The Scenic E-Tech Electric will come onto the market at the beginning of next year, which raises the bar significantly higher with a starting price of around 40,000 euros and a WLTP range of up to 625 kilometers.

The fully electric new edition of the Renault 5 is expected to be presented in the first quarter of 2024, with which the brand wants to penetrate completely new spheres in terms of price-performance ratio. The announced 25,000 euros for a range of up to 400 kilometers should be understood as a clear declaration of war on the competition from Europe, but also on China. The new interpretation of the electric all-rounder Renault 4 is expected to follow in 2025, before the 20,000 euro barrier will finally fall with the recently announced, fully electric Twingo in 2026. By the end of the decade, the range is expected to grow to seven electric cars.
