During the ASTM ICAM conference, Dyndrite presented a script that automatically generates layouts for AM samples according to ASTM/ISO standards. This includes standardized test coupons, labeling schemes, machine configurations and data management protocols.
The SMART script (Specimen Management via Automated Resource-efficient Techniques) should accelerate the validation of additive manufacturing production. The script was developed as part of a broader initiative that ASTM has taken. The new software should lead to a more efficient way in which companies produce their build layouts for material characterization and qualification.
All information about the test samples stored in a standardized manner
Validation costs can be reduced
“The ability to automate 3D printing according to ASTM/ISO standards and CMDS best practices is an important milestone in additive manufacturing,” said Steve Walton, head of product development at Dyndrite. “With the SMART script, we enable manufacturers to easily and consistently adhere to layout standards, preventing rederivation from industry rules and objectives and reducing costs.” By reducing the costs of validation, it becomes economically feasible to use additive manufacturing as a production technique. The script saves 99% of the time operators currently spend on building test pieces, collecting data, and prevents human errors. All data from each sample, such as position, rotation and volume, is automatically read into a standardized Excel file.
Now for single laser systems, expansion is coming
The script as presented this week in Atlanta is suitable for laser powder bed AM systems with a single laser source and a medium format build chamber. In the coming months it will be expanded to multi-laser AM systems and to LPBF printers with a longer range. Also wants Dyndrite make the script suitable for Binder Jetting systems and other powder bed AM techniques.
