Dutch Supersport Victory in Assen: Glenn van Straalen’s Dream Come True

With victory at the home race in Assen, with the Dutch supersport team Ten Kate Yamaha, a dream came true for Glenn van Straalen. His motorcycle was painted in matching colors.

Glenn van Straalen is no newcomer to the Supersport World Championship, the Dutchman has already participated in 83 races in the intermediate category of the series-based world championship and finished second on the podium in the first race at Assen 2022. But it was only four years later that the 23-year-old achieved his first win and it mightn’t have been nicer: With an orange-painted R6, the Yamaha rider drove a brave race ahead of his compatriots and thus created cheers for his team Ten Kate Racing and in the well-filled stands.

“It is fantastic to achieve this victory in Assen in the orange colours. “It feels absolutely amazing,” van Straalen stammered in disbelief. “To be able to do this as a Dutchman with a Dutch team is incredible. I am so grateful for the support of the team and everyone around me. Today my dream came true.”

By the way: One of his first successes was superbike ace Michael van der Mark (BMW), who won the supersport world championship ten years ago with the team from Nieuwleusen.

In the closing stages, Van Straalen rode a second faster than Ducati riders Adrian Huertas and Niki Tuuli, who flanked him on the podium.

“The race was anything but easy, but I felt good and had a strong rhythm,” van Straalen said. “After I switched to rain tyres, the gap to the front was huge. But with two laps to go I was first and that made things more complicated. I started thinking regarding what might be wrong. So I put my thoughts aside and took it curve by curve. It was an incredible feeling to see the gap shrink and the lead grow following I took first position. When I crossed the finish line I was overjoyed.”

“Today we experienced a piece of Dutch motorsport history,” added team principal Kervin Bos. “For us, doing this as a Dutch team with a Dutch driver in Assen is the dream that started it all. We have gone this way with many of Glenn’s Dutch companies, sponsors and partners, and he has already done it with us on his third race weekend. He kept his cool, decided to change tires at the right time and the team implemented the strategy perfectly. We are very happy and proud.”
