Dutch Deal Falls Flat: Dunkin’ Donuts’ European Expansion Hits a Roadblock

Dunkin’ Donuts is bankrupt. The bankruptcy has been filed by the company itself. The court in Amsterdam has appointed a curator who says “he will see how we can continue with the company in the best possible way.”

Dunkin’ Donuts has approximately 50 locations in the Netherlands, including one in Groningen. According to Derk van Geel, who has been appointed as curator by the court, the intention is to keep those stores open for the time being. “The staff has been informed with a short message, I think they will still have a lot of questions.” It is unknown how many people are employed by the company.

On Tuesday afternoon it was still possible to place orders online. The curator cannot guarantee that orders will be delivered. He will sit down with the company’s management tomorrow.

Inspire Brands

Dunkin’ Donuts is a brand name owned by the American Inspire Brands. Last year, the Van der Valk catering family took a majority stake. At the time, the intention was to expand the number of branches to 130.

In the past year, the opposite has happened: about 50 cases remain of the 70 that were taken over. Van der Valk International, one of the branches of the group, was mainly interested in the company because it attracts many young people. “They are the hotel guests of the future,” said commercial director Kirsten Hulscher at the time.
