Düsseldorf: New mobility station and more at Hamm S-Bahn station – Ddorf-Aktuell

The area at the Hamm S-Bahn station was a construction site for a long time, but on Thursday (September 19th) the mobility station was opened, a parcel station was integrated and the kiosk also has a new operator. Numerous Hamm residents stopped by for the opening and were interested in what was on offer. For the city’s subsidiary Connected Mobility Düsseldorf GmbH (CMD), it is the 15th mobility station in the city.

Upgrading the station square

Back in 2020, the Verbunt association had already decorated the exit of the Hamm S-Bahn station with graffiti. But the surrounding area was unsightly and a long construction site. Now a new area has been created that offers sustainable mobility options, greenery, benches and a parcel station for various providers. The future operators of the kiosk, who are still renovating, were there at the opening and are looking forward to welcoming customers in a few weeks.

The CMD had set up its information stand on Thursday, the coffee bike provided interested parties with coffee and pastries and the future kiosk sold sparkling wine, orange juice and cheese pickles.

“With the new Hamm S mobility station, another district will be connected to the city-wide mobility network planned. The connection to public transport will make it easier for local people to switch from rental cars or bicycles to the train,” explained Jochen Kral, Head of Mobility and Environment for the state capital of Düsseldorf.

Safe places for bicycles

Cyclists are happy about the secure bike racks under the underpass, as there the bikes are protected from wind and weather. If you want it to be even safer, you can book one of the bike boxes or one of the 16 spaces in the two-story bike station. The mobility station comes standard with a repair station for bikes, wheelchairs, etc. as well as two car-sharing spaces.

“The new mobility station not only improves the parking conditions for bicycles, but the three new sharing stations at the station and in the surrounding area also ensure improved accessibility to the Media Harbor,” adds Dr. David Rüdiger, Managing Director of CMD. So far, not all e-scooter providers have been represented in Hamm. The further network of sharing stations in the surrounding area is also being planned.

Collect parcels contactlessly

The parcel station does not only work for DHL shipments. Deutsche Bahn’s “Box – The Pick-up Station” also enables contactless pickup and shipping from other providers. It is also possible to leave luggage there or receive rental items.

“Station forecourts are lively places in a city and an essential part of a smart city. Mobility, logistics and infrastructure can be intelligently networked there. The partnership project at Düsseldorf-Hamm station is great proof of this. We are convinced that our Click&Collect service “Box – The Pick-up Station” will be very well received by travelers and the neighborhood,” reports Michael Eckenweber, Head of Smart Cities at “DB InfraGO AG”.

New seating has already been installed and eleven trees will be added for the planting season starting in November.

The total cost of the mobility station in Hamm is around 290,000 euros, 80 percent of which is financed by funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (FöRi-MM funding guidelines). Mobility stations are to be opened this year at the locations Schloßstraße, Kunstakademie, Schinkelstraße, Maria-und-Josef-Otten-Platz, Bankstraße and Münsterplatz.
