He was on his way to the summit as part of a training course and was secured to a rope, but the rope broke on a sharp rock edge when he fell. The victim was flown down to the valley in a police helicopter. According to the police, the fatal accident occurred at 8:30 a.m.
During the course, the Tyrolean climbed with his 48-year-old instructor from the Imst district in a guided rope team via the “Bleidächer” approach and further up the north ridge towards the summit of the Grosser Geiger. The 26-year-old took the lead for the training. At a height of around 3,080 meters, he lost his balance on a loose block of rock and fell.
Rope broke
According to the police report, the instructor reacted “as quickly as possible” and tried to stop the fall. However, the rope broke, probably due to the shearing movement over a sharp rock edge. Alpinists present administered first aid. However, the emergency doctor might only confirm the death of the 26-year-old.
Location: Great Violinist
The climbing tour over the north ridge is rated as a difficulty level of three (moderate) on the scale of the “Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme” (UIAA). The Grosser Geiger is located in the Hohe Tauern and borders East Tyrol.
