During the team’s exercises, a Tunisian Olympic champion dies by drowning

Tunisian female sailing Aya Qazekz, who represented her country at the Tokyo Olympics last summer, died at the age of 17 in an accident during the national team’s training, the International Olympic Committee announced Monday.

The accident occurred on Sunday when the sailboat she was on board with her twin sister and co-Olympic partner Sarah, capsized in strong winds. Aya drowned while her sister was rescued.

In a statement on the authority’s website, German Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, said: I am shocked by the news of the death of sailing champion Aya Kozakz. She was an inspiring talent and role model for her generation of athletes.

He continued, “Aya Kozhegaz’s participation in the Tokyo Olympics along with her twin sister Sarah will continue to motivate girls everywhere. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and the Olympic community in Tunisia.

The two sisters competed in the 49fx women’s windsurfing event at the Tokyo Olympics, ranking 21st.
