Old theatrical performances dominate the Eid al-Fitr season in Egypt
Old theatrical performances produced by the State Theater dominate the Eid al-Fitr season in Egypt, in light of the lack of production of new works recently. Among the plays that were previously shown during previous seasons and are being re-presented in the current Eid al-Fitr season are “Farida,” “Gypsy Moon,” “Bullet in the Heart,” “The Blind Spot,” and “Cupid’s Plan.”
The audience of the National Theater is preparing to watch the theatrical performance “Bullet in the Heart” once more, based on the novel by writer Tawfiq Al-Hakim, prepared, directed and starring Marwan Azab. Al-Ghad Theater will witness the theatrical performance “The Blind Spot”, starring Nour Mahmoud, based on the novel “Holidays” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Dramatic treatment and direction are prepared by Ahmed Fouad, while the Balloon Theater audience watches the play “The Gypsy Moon” once more, starring Mirna Walid, and written and directed by Amr Dawara.
The Theater Artistic House, headed by director Khaled Galal, Head of the Cultural Production Affairs Sector and Acting Head of the Theater Artistic House, under the patronage of Dr. Nevin Al-Kilani, Minister of Culture, presents the theatrical show “Hazem Very Decisive.”

On the second day of Eid al-Fitr, the “Lycée El Horreya” Theater in Alexandria will present the theatrical show “Hazem Very Decisive,” produced by the Alexandria Theater Troupe, led by artist Mohamed Morsi, writer Walid Youssef, and director Mohamed Morsi, and the show is part of 9 theatrical performances presented by the artistic teams at the Artistic House. For theatre, starting from the second day of Eid al-Fitr, in Cairo and Alexandria.
Regarding her participation in “Qamar Al-Ghajar,” artist Mirna Walid told Asharq Al-Awsat that theatrical performances in the public sector remain the most suitable for everyone, especially families who prefer to watch theater during the holiday season, and also meet the heroes of the show behind the scenes. Walid adds: “Despite my love for theater, the experience exhausted me a lot. Because theater requires dedication and careful preparation, and its fine details cannot be neglected.”
As for the artist Mohamed Adel, he returns once more to present the theatrical show “Noor in the World of the Seas” at the “Abdel Moneim Madbouly” Theater.

Meanwhile, the monodrama “Farida” will be re-presented at the “Vanguard” Theater, starring Aida Fahmy, written and directed by Akram Mostafa, based on the story “The Swan Song” by the Russian writer Antoine Chekhov.
In the same context, the artist Houria Farghaly announced, through her official Facebook page, her participation in theater for the first time through the play “Rapunzel in El Masry,” starting Friday, April 19, at the “Hosapir” Theater.
Theater critic Wafa Kamalo expressed her sadness over the marginalization of theater and not giving it its full due, and attributed the lack of theatrical performances this year to the “limited budget.”
Kamalo added to Asharq Al-Awsat that “the father of the arts” is the first pillar in the culture of generations, and the main engine for shaping their minds.

She confirms that “theater is an outlet for many groups and a large sector of society, and she wonders: Where is its production?, especially since the fiscal year is almost over and we have not seen signs of new theatrical performances in the public sector.”
Kamalo points out that “a single play coming to light in the public sector is preceded by technical problems and administrative and financial obstacles, unlike the private theatre.”
The Egyptian critic revealed that theater does not only need money for its revival, but rather it needs elaborate texts and a conscious team, stressing that “theater has a cultural concept that cannot be deviated from.”

Kamalo called on the state to support the theater to create a new theatrical archive, and to believe in the artistic power and great energies in writing, directing and acting, and the importance of theatre, its culture, and the freedom and awareness of its patrons. To preserve this entity, read its problems, confront its crises in a more agile and effective manner, and try to solve them in order to continue its production. Because that means the resilience of future generations.
During last February, the theater’s artistic house issued a statement confirming that director Khaled Galal, acting head of the theater’s artistic house, held a meeting with the troupe directors. To discuss the production plan for the current year. Jalal said on the sidelines of the meeting that the plan will be presented to the Minister of Culture, Dr. Nevin Al-Kilani, before it is put into effect, noting that the Minister of Culture pays great attention to theatrical activity.
