Iván Duque asked citizens to get vaccinated to face the new wave of infections.
During the delivery of a section of the Antioquia-Bolívar highway project, President Iván Duque He assured that Colombia is facing a fourth peak of the pandemic due to the omicron variant of the coronavirus and added that the country might even face new increases in cases in the course of this 2022.
“As long as the covid-19 pandemic exists we will see a fifth and maybe a sixth (peak)”, assured the president. He added that the National Vaccination Plan has made it possible to face the lethality of this new increase in cases.
Duque warned that the occupation of the Intensive Care Units (ICU) does not have the same pressure as in previous moments of the pandemic. In fact, in a recent statement, the Ministry of Health reported that there is 44.35% availability of ICU beds nationwide.
In turn, this has led to the fact that, for now, mortality rates have not reached the levels of past peaks.
“I think the invitation is clear. The best way to deal with this phenomenon is with mass vaccination. Vaccination is free and equitable, ”said Duque. “It is a moral and ethical duty to get vaccinated to protect ourselves and to protect others,” he said.
In Colombia, there are 28,600,589 people who already have their vaccination schedule and 3,522,444 others have been boosted. For the health authorities, this reinforcement is key to face the omicron variant, which is already the dominant one in the national territory.
