Having said that Nicolás Maduro “had his days numbered”, a phrase that has served the opposition and some sectors of opinion to criticize him, has been, in words by Iván Duque, one of his biggest mistakes.
This was revealed in an interview with the director of TimeAndres Mompotes. “Suddenly, having said that Maduro’s days were numbered might have been a mistake. He came from my heart, I do not regret it, but one can make mistakes, ”he pointed out.
However, he clarified that his opinion regarding Nicolás Maduro has nothing to do with the good relations he maintained with the Venezuelan people during his administration.
“I think you have to separate two things. Our relationship with Venezuela has been the best, understanding by Venezuela the Venezuelan people. Already in the relationship with the dictator, I have never wanted to have relations with that criminal”, he emphasized.
And it was harder later: “Maduro is a criminal, he is a dictator, he is a person who has gone through the Democratic Charter in Latin America in an atrocious way. That there is a consular relationship, perfect, you have to have them. That if they want to have an embassy to mediate differences, perfect. But what we can never be as a country is a validator, a pimp or, worst of all, indifferent to the ignominy that this dictatorship is producing.”
other errors
Duque also acknowledged some mistakes in choosing his team of collaborators, although he did not specify who.
“As a human being, you make mistakes in many things. Sometimes one might have had some errors in the selection of some people that one believed were the most suitable to carry out certain tasks and they were not. The fault lies with one because one was the one who chose them, “he said during the interview.
He also accepted that “suddenly he might have had more dialogue with the opposition to achieve a greater consensus” around the objections presented to the statutory law that regulated the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), which were finally sunk by the Constitutional Court, following a controversial process in Congress
“To err is human. I have given everything for my country with love and affection, I fulfilled a life project, but I did it with a sense of service, with a sense of dignity and with a sense of essence. I fulfilled Colombia by fulfilling more than 90% of my government plan and I fulfilled Colombia by leaving more than 85% of the National Development Plan in execution”, he concluded.
