Duolingo moves to gamification of music lessons… and mathematics

Technology: You’ll soon be able to use Duolingo to learn languages, math, and music.

The Duolingo app is known for being a language learning app that makes this often tedious process fun and intuitive. But now, on the strength of this experience, Duolingo is extending its learning platform to learning music.

Duolingo has just unveiled its new music course, which teaches how to read and play music through its signature gamified learning experience. Duolingo’s all-new music course includes the same techniques used in its language-learning platform, with hundreds of short lessons, interactive exercises and more than 200 “fun and familiar tunes,” according to a statement.

Images of the feature offered by Duolingo show interactive exercises such as “fill in the blank” and “match the pairs”, where users select the correct note to match the sound.

Gamification at all levels

Duolingo’s free music course aims to make learning music more accessible. Besides music, the app will also include math lessons.

The demo photos show that the math lesson will align with Duolingo’s current learning structure, once more gamifying the learning experience with fun little exercises, like selecting the right angle and sliding the tiles to perform a basic mathematical operation.

Duolingo says the courses will be available “soon”, with the big reveal scheduled for October 11 during Duocon, Duolingo’s annual free virtual conference. The announcement comes just in time for the back-to-school season, following recent announcements from Grammarly, Chegg and Quizlet regarding their AI learning tools.
