From cork’s Patrick Street to Superstores: The Dunnes Stores Story
The story of Dunnes Stores is deeply woven into the fabric of Irish retail history. It all began in 1944, with the opening of the very first store on Patrick Street in Cork. The response was overwhelming; shoppers swarmed the store, eager to snag quality clothing at prices reminiscent of the pre-war era. This marked the beginning of ireland’s “first shopping frenzy,” as eager customers clamored for Ben Dunne’s “Better Value” offerings. The excitement was so intense that a window was even broken, necessitating the intervention of the local police to manage the crowds.
Building on this initial success, Dunnes expanded its presence throughout the 1950s, opening more stores across the country. Then, in 1960, they ventured into the world of groceries, starting with a modest selection of apples and oranges. “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town,” a company spokesperson commented, highlighting their commitment to affordability. Over the years, their food selection has grown exponentially, encompassing a wide range of carefully sourced products from both local Irish suppliers and international sources. “Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas,” the spokesperson continued.
Dublin saw its first Dunnes store open its doors on Henry Street in 1957, followed by the grand unveiling of a superstore on South great Georges Street in 1960. The chain’s ambition knew no bounds, reaching beyond the Republic of Ireland in 1971 with the opening of its first store in Northern Ireland, quickly followed by many more. The 1980s witnessed further expansion, taking Dunnes Stores to Spain, and later extending into Scotland and England.
Today, Dunnes Stores stands as a retail powerhouse, with 142 stores and a workforce of 15,000 employees. Their enduring success is a testament to the vision of its founder,Ben Dunne,and the company’s steadfast dedication to providing quality products at competitive prices.

L: Absolutely. The Stackable Recycling Bin is indeed a standout piece. It started as a response to the new Deposit Return Scheme, but it’s evolved into so much more.
