Dungeons & Dragons gets an official virtual tabletop powered by Unreal Engine
Over the past few years, remote desktop role-playing software has become more popular than ever — for obvious reasons. No content with people using third party software like roll 20Wizards Of The Coast announced today that they are making their own virtual Dungeons & Dragons table using Unreal Engine 5. It looks pretty cool.
The default schedule is called D&D Digital and was announced today as part of the Wizards Presents stream. You will find it around 7m 20s from this video. As reported by (sister site RPS) dice cuttersThe platform will allow people to create 3D environments, fill them with miniatures, and then animate them as their adventure progresses.
The program provides practical tools to assist the game, including the program’s rolling dice, health bars, and animated characters using a distance measuring ruler. There’s also a tilt-and-shift camera effect in the software to make it look like a model of a world you’re messing around with.
If you don’t want to bundle environments together from prepackaged prefab buildings, Wizards also say they’ll bundle the software with pre-built environments and campaigns. The idea is of course that it will be as accessible and user friendly as possible.
Wizards Of The Coast has announced the virtual desktop software along with the successor to D&D Version 5. No, it’s not the sixth edition, but “One D&D,” which will effectively treat the tabletop system as an ever-evolving live service game rather than the occasional major releases.
