In Saint-Gilles, in the Brussels region, the “Dune” association was forced to exceptionally close its services for a week. Dune is a first-line shelter for drug addicts in great difficulty. The public can come and land there, in complete safety. He may also see a medical team and social workers there. In recent times, the team has been faced with growing tensions.

“What we have seen for several years and which tends to multiply are situations of tension and violence within our public, during our reception in the evening. They threaten the integrity of our team. It is a decision taken collectively and reluctantly. In addition to threatening the integrity of workers, these situations hinder the exercise of quality social work” explains Charlotte Bonbled, communication officer for the association.

A situation that Dune explains by a public more and more numerous and more and more precarious. “Ona more and more requests and people who show up in the evening in front of our door. And then it is also the complexity of the requests. We have people who have a whole series of problems, particularly in mental health. Inevitably, our team is faced with an increasingly large incoming queue and is no longer able to ensure its work and quality work.“, continues the communication officer.

The respite will last a week: the association will reopen this Wednesday, May 2. During the closure, the team thought regarding ways to have more peace of mind. Momentarily, the evening reception will be held 4 times a week (instead of 5 so far) in order to strengthen the team on those evenings.
