Dumont de Chassart and Besard: the new wave of Belgian golf hits hard!

The 2023 season is over on the main international men’s circuits. This is a great opportunity to take stock of the performances of the various Belgian players.

Thomas Detry did not meet his challenges

Now a member of the American PGA Tour, the Brussels champion, 30 years old, has not achieved his objectives. At the start of the season, he hoped to win his first tournament, enter the world Top 50 and compete in the Ryder Cup. He failed to meet these challenges. In reality, often well placed, he still fails to deliver the blow in important moments. No one has forgotten his last round at the Soudal Open where victory held out his arms to him. It is clearly the mental aspect of his game that Jérôme Theunis’ protégé must work on to take a new step in his career. Because it is not talent that he lacks.

The supersonic debut of Adrien Dumont de Chassart

Turning pro in June, the 23-year-old from Villers made his supersonic debut on the American Korn Ferry Tour. Winner of his first tournament, he then had five other Top 10 finishes (a historic record) to seal his promotion to the PGA Tour in 2024 at lightning speed. Cited for a moment among the candidates for selection in the Ryder Cup, he then marked time, but with his offensive game, he clearly has the potential to continue his rise in power on the first American circuit. If he confirms, he will be ideally placed to defend, with Detry, the colors of Belgium at the Paris Games.

Nicolas Colsaerts is a hit… on British TV

Despite a good end to the season, the Brussels native did not manage to keep his card on the DP World Tour and will have to be content, in 2024, to play invitational tournaments. Physically diminished since his health problems in November 2021 (rare kidney disease), the Belgian Bomber, who has just celebrated his 41st birthday, has become philosophical over time and prioritizes, as soon as possible, his family life. However, golf still runs in his veins. When he is not on the fairways, he will commentate on major tournaments for British TV (where he is a hit). And he obviously aims to retain his rank as Ryder Cup vice-captain. Waiting for better…

Matthis Besard, the other nice surprise

This is the nice surprise of this end of year. Also a pro since last spring, the 23-year-old from Flandrien has just climbed onto the DP World Tour thanks to his third place during qualifying in Tarragona. A real feat for this player who had a timid start on the Challenge Tour. With Dumont de Chassart, Besard fully symbolizes the new wave of Belgian swing. Trained in Waregem, passed through the American university system, he has a less flamboyant game than Adrien but his very complete technical register should allow him to continue his progress.

Thomas Pieters should not see the Paris Olympics

Exiled on the LIV (the famous dissident circuit financed by Saudi petrodollars), the Antwerp native did not really hit the headlines with his results (only one Top 10 in the year). Having fallen to 163rd place in the world, he will no longer have access to any Grand Slam in 2024 and will probably also miss the Paris Olympics. On the other hand, he should not regret his choice from a financial point of view. Despite his disappointing performances, this season he received nearly $4 million for his trouble!
