DURHAM – Virginia’s Dani Mendez-Trendler knocked in a rebound off a save from Duke’s Piper Hampsch in the 74th minute to lift the eighth-ranked Cavaliers to a 2-1 double overtime victory once morest the No. 2 Blue Devils in non-conference field hockey action Sunday followingnoon on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
The loss stops Duke’s win streak at 11 games as the Blue Devils drop to 13-2 overall. Virginia improves to 9-5 on the year. It is the Blue Devils’ first overtime loss in five contests this season.
Duke sophomore Alain McVeigh had the goal for the Blue Devils, while Hampsch had four saves in goal.
How it Happened
Virginia got off to a quick start, scoring in the third minute. Dani Mendez-Trendler dribbled to the endline and sent a pass across the face of the goal where Taryn Tkachuk tapped it in for her sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils controlled the run of play for much of the remainder of the opening period but mightn’t break down the Virginia backline. Duke struggled at times getting circle entries as the Cavaliers held the Blue Devils to just one shot in the opening 30 minutes.
Duke’s defense was equally as stout, keeping the Cavaliers to that one shot in the first half.
The Blue Devils continued to move the ball well and broke through to tie the game with 5:41 left in the third quarter. Equalizing for Duke was McVeigh with a sensational individual effort following Virginia seemed to smother the Blue Devils’ penalty corner attempt. The Landsdale, Pa., native re-collected the ball and dribbled her way through four Virginia defenders and flipped a shot into the cage to make it 1-1.
Both teams had opportunities in the fourth quarter with the Cavaliers outshooting Duke, 5-2, in the 15-minute period. Hampsch came up huge for the Blue Devils in the waning seconds with a stop on a penalty corner to force overtime.
The Blue Devils nearly called game in the first overtime when Hannah Miller’s effort was saved off the line by Virginia’s Adele Iacobucci. Miller had another great look at the cage in the 69th minute blocked by the stick of a Virginia defender. Count Curland also fired two shots on cage, but the Cavalier defense stood tall and came through with the goal three minutes into the second overtime for the victory.
Virginia finished with a slight 13-12 edge in shots and won the penalty corner battle 7-3. Tyler Kennedy had three saves in goal for the Cavaliers.
Notes
Duke’s 11-game win streak is the longest in program history, surpassing the nine-game unbeaten streak in 2003.
The Blue Devils move to 58-59-7 all-time in overtime action, 12-18-1 in double overtime and 13-24-3 at home. Duke’s four-game overtime win streak was tied for the longest in program history.
With four saves, Piper Hampsch takes over seventh on the Duke career saves list with 260. She is 10 away from sole possession of the No. 5 spot.
Both of Duke’s setbacks this season have come by a single goal.
