Dueling Perspectives: Analyzing the Trump-Harris Debate Dynamics
  • US presidential hopefuls outlined their positions on issues of national and international interest

US presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump held their first public debate on September 10, less than two months before the US presidential election.

The meeting, which lasted a total of 90 minutes, took place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. After shaking hands, Harris (Democratic Party) and Trump (Republican Party) discussed issues of interest to American citizens and the international community, such as migration, the US economy and abortion.

The opponents also discussed other issues of international interest such as the war in Ukraine, the Middle East crisis, and the validity of the US Constitution.

The topics that set the tone for the first public debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris:

United States Economy

Trump stressed his criticism of how prices have risen during Joe Biden’s administration and blamed him for the inflation that is being recorded in the country.

“There was no inflation under me, and they (Biden and Harris) had the highest inflation in history,” Trump said at the start of the debate.

For her part, the current vice president of the nation affirmed that the Biden Administration had to “clean up the mess left by Donald Trump” after his four years in the White House and accused the former president of having left the United States with “the worst unemployment since the Great Depression”, “the worst attack” on “democracy since the Civil War” and “the worst public health epidemic in a century”.

Responding to Americans’ concerns about the economy, Harris promised to boost the construction of three million new homes over four years and restore the child tax credit so that Americans can access a tax credit of up to $3,600 per child, as well as offering a special $6,000 credit for new parents.

Trump, meanwhile, has promised to extend and expand tax cuts already passed by congressional Republicans in 2017 at his direction.

He also suggested that he would encourage economic growth by deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, a measure that economists believe could harm the labor market, as well as by dramatically expanding tariffs on almost all imported foreign products.

In fact, much of his trade agenda has focused on China, with tariffs of up to 100% on Chinese goods suggested.

Trump sees these taxes as a way to fund other tax cuts, reduce the deficit and even fund child care, though these tariffs could raise prices for consumers without generating the promised revenue.

Migration in the United States

Debate moderator David Muir asked Trump how he would proceed to expel 11 million migrants. To do so, the Republican candidate insisted on the need to close the border with Mexico to prevent migrants “from all over the world” from trying to cross into the United States.

“She (Harris) and her party have destroyed this country,” Trump said.

Trump, in turn, baselessly claimed that some undocumented immigrants “are eating pets” in Springfield, Ohio, a theory that municipal leaders have repeatedly rejected and have clarified that there is no evidence that this is happening.

“She is destroying this country, and if she becomes president, this country has no chance of success. (The country) will end up being Venezuela on steroids,” he said.

For her part, Harris, when asked why the Biden Administration waited to impose asylum restrictions, argued on her record as a prosecutor. She also said that she is “the only person in this scenario who has prosecuted transnational criminal organizations for trafficking in arms, drugs, and human beings.”

Legality of abortion

US Vice President Kamala Harris told the former US president that he “should not tell a woman what to do with her body” in relation to the legality of abortion in that country.

“The government and certainly Donald Trump should not be telling a woman what to do with her body,” the Democratic candidate said. She advocated for re-implementing federal abortion protections that were struck down by the Supreme Court in June 2022.

Trump, for his part, accused Democrats, whom he described as “radicals,” of allowing abortions at nine months of gestation and even the “execution” of babies once they are born, a claim that the presenters intervened to deny.

Trump said he believes in exceptions to abortion restrictions in cases of sexual abuse, incest and danger to the mother’s life. He said 85% of Republicans also support this.

On September 11, Donald Trump said he was less willing to face Kamala Harris in another debate, despite the vice president’s campaign proposing a second meeting.

“I’m less inclined to do it, because we had a great night. We won the debate,” Trump said in a phone call with the show. Fox and Friends.

Previously, the medium Fox News had sent a letter to both candidates proposing a “rematch” for October.

US Elections: What Do the Polls Say?

The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5. Previously, the candidates who were to face each other were the current president Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump, however, on July 21 Biden withdrew his candidacy.

“It is the best thing for my party and the country,” the president said, following his controversial performance in the debate with Trump in June.

After withdrawing from the election campaign, Biden asked his supporters to vote for Kamala Harris as his replacement in the upcoming elections.

Polls had consistently shown Biden trailing Trump, but those results have turned around since Harris began her campaign.
