Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Public Works made the third payment to fishermen, longline workers and coppersmiths from the Bañado Tacumbú neighborhood of Asunción. It corresponds to compensation for the temporary suspension of their activities due to the dredging works of the Paraguay River for the construction of the Costanera Sur Avenue.
The payment benefits 83 people from the United Fishermen’s Association of the Tacumbú Marshes, some 58 fishermen, 20 longline fishermen and 5 tinners, for an amount of Gs. 98.384.770.
This subsidy is part of the Rehabilitation and Housing Program of the Bañado Sur in Asunción, Tacumbú Neighborhood, promoted by the MOPC.
This project, allied to Avenida Costanera Sur, includes the construction of the New Bañado Tacumbú Neighborhood and the implementation of actions to improve fishing activity in the medium and long term.
On the occasion, Victor Genes, socio-environmental coordinator of the PRVBT Executive Unit team, acknowledged the commitment of the president of the Fishermen’s Association, who closely followed and accompanied this work for the delivery of the money. He said that they are hopeful that the New Neighborhood will improve the conditions of everyone, including the fishermen who will have a new infrastructure for the organization, he added.
Enriqueta Florentín, president of the Association, said that fishing is very important for the sector, because it allows them to carry out their daily activities at home. She said that for them the river is a business, so they must take care of it, while thanking the efforts made for the payment.
