Due to muscle tear: Rafael Nadal cancels Australian Open

The 22-time Grand Slam winner, who returned to the tour in Brisbane this week following almost a year out due to injury, suffered a minor muscle tear and withdrew from Melbourne.

“I am currently not ready to compete in five-set matches of the highest level. I am flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get treatment and rest,” the 37-year-old superstar explained via social networks.

Nadal underwent an MRI scan. “I had a micro-tear in a muscle, not where I had the injury, and that’s good news,” Nadal explained. He worked very hard on his comeback and it was always his goal to be able to play at his best level within three months. Even though he’s sad regarding not being able to compete in Melbourne, it’s not all bad news. “We remain positive for further developments this season.”
