Even before the Austrian GP, the signs were good that a Ducati rider would be allowed to climb onto the top step of the podium in the MotoGP class. Because since the premier class returned to the Red Bull Ring in 2016, Ducati has been the most successful manufacturer in Austria with seven victories (as of 2022). The remaining two triumphs were secured by KTM with Miguel Oliveira (2020) and Brad Binder (2021).
Most recently, Ducati works rider Pecco Bagnaia won on the 4.318 km long track in Styria. With his pole position in qualifying, he demonstrated once more this year that he is the one to beat in both the sprint and the Grand Prix on Sunday. But KTM ace Brad Binder also underlined his ambitions to give KTM their third home win with starting position 2.
The South African was also the only rider able to challenge Bagnaia in both races, but ultimately had to beat the MotoGP World Champion. Bagnaia won both races by two and five seconds respectively, extending his championship lead over Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Ducati) to 62 points.
It was a memorable weekend for Bagnaia in many ways as Sunday’s win not only marked the Italian’s 50th GP podium, but also the seventh Italian MotoGP win in the first ten races since 2006, when Loris won the first half of the season Capirossi, Valentino Rossi and Marco Melandri. With his fifth win of the season, Bagnaia has won exactly 50% of the ten Sunday races so far.
His 16th MotoGP victory also puts Bagnaia on the podium in the ranking of the most successful Italian riders. He is now the third best Italian in history. MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi tops that statistic with 89 wins, followed by 15-time world champion Giacomo Agostini with 68 wins.
The 26-year-old Italian also pulled off his second hat-trick of the year, once once more taking pole position, both wins and the fastest race lap in both the sprint and GP races following Mugello.
With Bagnaia and brand colleague Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing) on the podium, Ducati also managed to have at least one Ducati rider on the podium since 36 Grand Prix races – a new record.
