From now on, MR Carolo is represented in the Walloon Parliament by the party group leader in the Charleroi municipal council, Nicolas Tzanetatos. But since 2021, a new blue rooster has entered the liberal barnyard in Charleroi. Denis Ducarme, former minister, still a federal deputy, has already declared that he aspires to become mayor of Charleroi. The ambition is not small since the PS remains, with 26 seats out of 51, the leading Carole party by far. To achieve this, Denis Ducarme intends to occupy first place on the MR list during the municipal elections of October 2024. A ballot which will take place barely 4 months after the mega ballot in June (federal, regional, European) where Ducarme intends play an important role here too.
This head of list in the municipal elections, the former minister considers that he has acquired it. Because when he arrived in the MR section of Charleroi, the general assembly designated him leader. For him, it goes without saying that this designation de facto grants him the head of the list for the 2024 municipal elections.
But Nicolas Tzanetatos doesn’t see it that way. He believes he is doing important work in opposition to the Charleroi municipal council and intends to promote it during the next municipal election by being head of the list. He also believes that it will be up to the general assembly of the section to determine who will lead the troops.
Complaints against Ducarme
Certainly, Denis Ducarme is a well-known political figure. But it is not yet certain that the transplant has already taken place in Charleroi. In the end, it appears that both have strengths. It will therefore not be easy to decide between the two. The scores of Nicolas Tzanetatos and Denis Ducarme in previous elections could, however, help activists make a choice. In 2019, Tzanetatos was head of the MR list in the Charleroi-Thuin constituency for the Walloon Parliament. Denis Ducarme was head of the list in the Chamber in Hainaut. The two constituencies do not have the same contours, it is therefore necessary to take into consideration the score achieved by each in the commune of Charleroi. Ducarme had collected 2,162 votes and Tzanetatos, 2,125 – compared to 910, a year earlier during the municipal election. Very close scores. Since then Ducarme has left his luggage in the capital of the Black Country, “missioned” by his party president as he claims. As for Tzanetatos, his action in the municipal council has probably strengthened his popularity, he can hope for a higher score.
Complaint against Ducarme
However, even if no one seems too worried about it at the moment, we must not forget that Denis Ducarme is the subject of at least two complaints for harassment. He obviously remains innocent until proven guilty, but this type of affair does not always go well with an electoral campaign. Ducarme, who sees the timing of these complaints as anything but a coincidence, said in the local press that he was not bothered by “second-rate egos”.
