Dubai’s Growing Shared Bicycle and Electric Scooter Network: A Complete Guide and Safety Tips

Badr Al-Sairi, Director of the Traffic Executive Department at the Traffic and Roads Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, said that the number of shared bicycle and electric scooter trips reached more than two million trips until the end of last year 2022.

He revealed to Al-Khaleej that the length of the scooter and bicycle paths provided by the authority amounted to 544 km until the end of the same year, indicating that these paths are allowed to drive electric scooters, except for bicycle paths in the Wasih Al-Salam field, as they are paths designated for sports riders in accordance with the various categories used for bicycles.

He added that the authority has implemented rental stations along the paths of bicycles and electric scooters, through the “Careem” company, and stations for shared electric scooter rentals have been provided through 4 companies, including international companies.

Al-Sairi indicated that the authority launched the shared electric scooter service in Dubai, after reviewing international best practices and studying technical specifications and standards, which determine the most appropriate commercial model for the emirate.

He explained that the bicycle and electric scooter rental service has become one of the means of individual transportation for the first and last mile trips that the public uses to move between mass transportation.

Al-Siri warned against the unsafe use of bicycles and electric scooters, in order to avoid any errors or traffic accidents, and stressed the need to follow instructions, signs and traffic signs.

He said that the authority provides a permit to drive electric scooters to citizens, residents and visitors of the Emirate of Dubai through its website and in simple steps within one hour after the beneficiary passes a remote course through its platform, provided that the age of the user is not less than 16 years.

Al-Sairi stated that the authority started operating the shared electric scooter rental service after setting a number of standards and requirements that guarantee the safety of users, and includes the existence of a mechanism to control and violate non-compliancers, through the Dubai Police, and according to what was determined by Executive Council Resolution No.
