Dubai’s Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags Coming into Effect: What You Need to Know

Dubai: The ban on single-use plastic bags in the city of Dubai, UAE, will come into effect from Monday, January 1, 2024. The resolution was issued by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai as part of promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle and reusable products.

These regulations apply to all sellers and consumers in the entire Emirate of Dubai. It will include private development zones and free zones, including the Dubai International Financial Centre. Sheikh Hamdan’s resolution aims to control the use and recycling of single-use plastic items, Emirates News Agency reported. The resolution aims to phase out the import and trade of single-use products.

Single-use disposable and recycled products, including plastics and non-plastic items, will be phased out regardless of their material composition. This includes food delivery packaging materials, fruit and vegetable wrapping, rigid plastic bags, plastic containers, packaging materials made partly or entirely of plastic such as those used in plastic bottles, snack bags, wet wipes, balloons and balloon sticks.

Violators will be fined Dh200. If the same violation is repeated within a year, the fine will be doubled. It can be up to a maximum of Dh2,000. Those who have been fined can appeal in writing to the authorities within ten days.

Phased out ban

  • The ban on plastic bags will come into effect from January 1, 2024.
  • Single-use non-plastic products including bags from June 1, 2024.
  • From January 1, 2025, single-use items such as cups, straws, coffee sticks, containers, cotton swabs etc.
  • From January 1, 2026, single-use plastic products such as plastic plates, food containers, tableware, beverage cups and their plastic lids will be banned.

Plastics not banned
The resolution states that the ban on single-use plastic bags, including thin film rolls for wrapping meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, cereals, bread and garbage bags, will not be implemented. Exemptions also apply to products manufactured for export. This includes plastic shopping bags, alternative shopping bags and disposable plastic products.
