If the idea of four-wheel drive is very successful for certain categories of cars, this is not the case when this concept is transposed to two-wheelers. Yamaha tried to create two-wheel drive motorcycles, but they never met their audience. However, the manufacturer has found a new type of vehicle that might benefit from it: the electric bicycle.
Yamaha has just presented two new electric bike models. The first is the Y-01W AWD, equipped with a central motor at the bottom bracket, and a second motor at the front wheel. It is powered by two batteries to provide great autonomy, as well as wide tires for off-road use. Yamaha doesn’t give a lot of information, so you’ll just have to look for details in the many photos. on his website.

The second model is the Y-00Z MTB, a modified version of the YDX-Moro, featuring dual suspension and a central motor located above the crankset. This bike has the particularity of being equipped with a power steering system. Here once more, Yamaha does not give many details, but explains that the system relies on a magnetostrictive torque sensor which allows “ both excellent maneuverability and stability for off-road use ».
Both bikes are currently presented as concepts. You should therefore not expect to find them in stores. However, this gives hope that the brand might at least present a mainstream model with two-wheel drive in the near future.
