Drywall system: components are also important

The drywall system emerged in the United States at the end of the 19th century. Here in Brazil, it gained prominence in the 2000s, through the founding of the Drywall Association, which aims to disseminate technology throughout the civil construction business chain, in order to maintain support programs and dissemination of the material not only in academic and real estate groups, but also among consumers and other professionals in the field.

Since then, the Association has been implementing a Product Quality Sector Program, which aims to evaluate the conformity of the components involved in drywall construction procedures, ensuring that the system meets structural safety requirements and complies with established standards.

According to Nicolás Paoloni, industrial manager at Barbieri do Brasil, the drywall system has been constantly growing in the civil construction area, which means that there is a need to take care of current standards and good production practices for the materials that make up the system and also executive projects and procedures for assembly. “Complying with procedures, modulations, spacing and correctly fixed and anchored typologies is of fundamental importance, as is the choice of materials that meet current standards”, he explains.

The executive highlights that it is important to follow the regulations of the qualification system for component materials and construction systems (SiMaC) of the Brazilian Habitat Quality and Productivity Program of the Ministry of Cities of the Federal Government (PBQP-H). According to Paoloni, the standardization adopted for the technical reference aims to control and attribute the performance of the system in all components, namely: plasterboard panels, steel profiles, glass wool felts, support devices for ceilings, joints with tape paper, PET wool and pasta.

Still according to Paoloni, standards are generally spoken of individually, but it is important to also explain the regulations that unite the components of the drywall system, guaranteeing the level of performance and structural stability in the different applications for which it is intended. “The standard is ABNT 15.758:2009 – ‘Constructive systems in plasterboard for drywall – Design and executive procedures for assembly – Parts 1,2 and 3: Requirements for systems used as walls, ceilings and coverings’ and specifically deals with executive procedures for assembling ceilings, walls and drywall coverings”, he explains.

Finally, the executive highlights that it is important that everyone involved in drywall production must seek to meet product requirements and market development, with specifiers, assemblers, builders, installers and contractors being responsible for following and working in accordance with these standards, ensuring the seriousness and continuity of sustainable growth in this segment.
