The skin of DRX, the winner of the 2022 LoL World Championship (Roll Cup), has been revealed. The Riot Games development team said, “The narrative of DRX, which was an underdog, and the story of each player were included in the skin.”

Riot Games held an online media briefing on the DRX winning skin on the 16th. The development team at Riot headquarters, including concept art manager Thomas Landby, art director Ben Skut, sound designer Emmanuel Lagumbai, and general animator Matthew Johnson, participated and explained the process and meaning of the development of the DRX team’s Worlds winning skin.

Riot Games releases a tribute skin every year to commemorate the Worlds winning team. A total of 6 skins were created to commemorate DRX’s victory, and they were decided as ‘Aatrox’, ‘Kindred’, ‘Maokai’, ‘Akali’, ‘Caitlin’, and ‘Ash’.

The development team divided the main points into six categories in the skin production process. These include ‘Blue Dragon’, ‘Light Blue’, ‘Team’s Heroic Narrative’, ‘Dark and Sharp Atmosphere Avoidance’, ‘Optimistic Atmosphere and Comradeship’, and ‘Alpaca’.

Right following the World Championship finals last year, the development team met with the DRX team and talked regarding the skin concept. The DRX team hoped to reveal the blue dragon and light blue color that symbolize the team, and the development team also focused on this part and started making the skin.

“At the stage of skin production, the team focused on containing a heroic narrative,” said the development team. “Some of the previous winning skins had dark or sharp designs. There was a request to avoid this concept, so we focused on expressing bright and positive energy.”

The dragon, which symbolizes DRX, is expressed with an emphasis on a stylish appearance, escaping from the traditional image. The scales and flames that appear when the champion uses the skill are used to create a modern and sci-fi feel.

A representative example is Ashe of support “Beryl” Joon-hee. When Ashe uses her E skill ‘Falcon Fly’ and her ultimate skill ‘Magic Crystal Arrow’, a dragon appears.

The light blue color requested by the players was also emphasized through the champion’s costumes and skills. The development team explained, “(During the skin development process), the dragon was able to give a strong impression through visual and sound elements.

Alpaca, an animal symbolizing captain Kim “Deft” Hyuk-gyu, was used to emphasize the strong bond between the players. Including Caitlyn, Maokai, and Akali, alpaca appears in various forms.

“The team wanted alpaca to be implemented in other champion skins as well,” said the development team. I tried not to make it ridiculous.”

The needs of the players were also reflected as much as possible.

Aatrox, chosen by top laner Hwang “Kingen” Seong-hoon, was expressed so that the DRX logo, X, was visible on the wings and weapons of the champion. In Skill and Rare Situation, there is a scene in which he played an active part in the 5th set of the final and lifting the championship trophy. The development team explained, “Aatrox is implemented in a modern and fashionable way,” and “there are many elements that can show DRX in the costume.”

In the process of making jungler skins, we focused on the fun factor.

Hong Chang-hyeon, ‘Mark’, suggested Kindred dancing as an idea to the development team, and Lee Joo-han, ‘Resident in Korea’, requested that Maokai’s ‘seedlings’ work together to lift the championship trophy. In addition, fun elements are reflected in the skins of the two players.

The development team said, “Working with Hong Chang-hyun was really fun. I often communicate in the community, and I hoped that this would be included in the skin,” he said. “(Even in Korea) seedlings with a sense of humor appear. It is a skin that reflects the player’s personality well.”

Dragon-related elements appear in many parts, including mid laner Kim “Zekka” Gun-woo’s Akalienne costume. In the return stage, the championship trophy was used to emphasize the agility of the champion.

Kim Hyuk-kyu, the main character of ‘The Heart That Doesn’t Break (The Important Thing is Unbreakable),’ hoped that the story of overcoming the difficult journey would be included in the skin. I want Alpaca to be used for skills, but I requested that it not be used for the purpose of damaging the opponent. The development team said, “We wanted the alpaca caught in Caitlyn’s trap to feel like a toy,” and “we made it look like a stuffed animal comes out when the trap is triggered.”

Jo Keon-hee revealed that during the process of making Ash’s skin, the character made specific requests, such as tying her long hair or becoming more sophisticated. He requested that blue be emphasized even at the stage of using weapons or skills.

The development team added, “The players were also delighted with the results that reflected various ideas.

Meanwhile, the DRX winning skin will be released in early June.
