Drummer Fredy Studer died unexpectedly on Monday. He was part of the jazz group OM, which played here at the Willisau Jazz Festival in 2008 (archive photo).

Studer was internationally known and, according to management, was one of the outstanding Swiss drummers in the fields of jazz and improvisation over the past 40 years. He was successful with the electric jazz free music band OM, founded in 1972. OM celebrates their 50th anniversary this fall with a new album.

In 2018 Fredy Studer published his solo work “Now’s the Time”. That was also the motto of how Fredy Studer thought and lived, according to the agency. “The presence in the moment, the power of immediacy, the energy of improvisation: that was his expression, his elixir of life.”
