Barbate, Spain: Drug smugglers kill two investigators with a speedboat
When police officers wanted to check a suspected smuggling boat in the harbor in Barbate, Spain, the criminals stepped on the gas: two investigators died.
-
Drugs are often smuggled ashore on the Spanish Atlantic coast.
-
To do this, the criminals use highly motorized speedboats.
-
Now smugglers ran over two Spanish investigators in the port of Barbate.
Two Civil Guard officers died on Friday when they were run over by a narco-speed boat in the port of Barbate in Cadiz, sources at the Military Institute confirmed. One of the deceased was a member of the Rapid Response Group and the other was a member of the Underwater Activities Specialist Group. The exact circumstances of the collision and the identities of the deceased investigators were not disclosed. According to press reports, a third person was seriously injured and may lose an arm.
The officers were stationed in the Barbate area and were under the command of the Guardia Civil in Cadiz. Unofficial sources confirm to “El Pais” that some of the drug boats that usually stay at sea to smuggle drugs took shelter from the bad weather in the port of Barbate this Friday. There was a small boat there with the two agents on board, who were rammed and killed by the smuggling boat.
High-speed patrol boats for the police
The violent reaction of some drug traffickers when they are intercepted at sea by Guardia Civil ships has led military leaders to decide to purchase high-speed patrol boats. These should be able to withstand the impact of smuggling boats.
After purchasing two of these reinforced boats, measuring 18.5 meters in length and capable of speeds of over 55 knots (almost 100 km/h), in 2021, the Ministry of Interior has issued two more tenders to provide the armed forces with six more boats worth around 15 million euros to be delivered. Two of them are scheduled to be delivered in the first half of this year.
On its social networks, the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) regrets Friday’s tragic event.
