(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Kyung-yoon = Russian figure skating women’s single Kamila Balieva (16), who caused a doping scandal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, is on the verge of a four-year suspension of qualifications as a player.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on its website on the 14th (local time) that “the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has filed a lawsuit once morest the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) and Balieva,” and that “the arbitration process has begun.” .

CAS said, “WADA demanded that all of Balieva’s competition results be canceled following December 24, last year, the date of the positive test sample, along with a 4-year penalty for Balieva’s qualifications.”

CAS plans to appoint three arbitrators following receiving written statements from WADA and Balieva.

One from WADA, one from RUSADA and Balieva, and one from CAS.

After that, CAS will set up a hearing and other schedules and proceed with legal procedures regarding the Balieva doping case.

It is likely that it will take at least several months or years for the final result to come out, and the losing party can appeal to the Swiss Federal Court.

WADA recently filed a complaint regarding Balieva’s doping with the CAS following RUSADA, which led the doping investigation, did not meet the deadline for submitting the investigation results.

If WADA’s demands are fulfilled, Balieva will not be able to compete in all competitions for the next four years, including the 2026 Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics.

Also, the Russian Olympic Committee might strip Balieva of her gold medal in the team figure skating event at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not hold an awards ceremony and did not award medals when Valiyeva’s doping was discovered right following the Russian Olympic Committee won the team event.

If the gold medal is stripped by the Russian Olympic Committee, the United States, which placed second, will hang the gold medal around its neck. 3rd place Japan gets a silver medal and 4th place Canada gets a bronze medal.

Baliyeva caused a stir when trimetazidine, a banned drug ingredient, was detected in a urine sample submitted in December 2021 during the Beijing Winter Olympics in February.

At the time, Balieva was not disqualified from the Olympics for being a minor under the age of 16 without self-initiative for drug use, and competed normally in the women’s singles event.

Balieva failed to win a medal in fourth place, making a series of mistakes as if feeling burdened by public opinion.

Balieva’s doping case changed the world of ice skating.

The International Skating Union (ISU) raised the age of eligibility for international figure skating senior competitions from 15 years old to 17 years old as of July 1 just before the competition to protect young athletes.

Russian players are not participating in international competitions this season due to sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine, and Balieva is only participating in Russian domestic competitions.

Balieva recently presented an unconventional program at a Russian national competition, using her doping discovery news as narration.

Balieva still denies doping. The Russian authorities are also ignoring the criticism of the international community, such as awarding rewards and medals.
