The Mexican singer and composer Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, better known as Peso Pluma, was threatened with death. Four signs appeared in different parts of the city of Tijuana, where the singer has a concert scheduled on October 14.
“Refrain from showing up on October 14 because it will be your last presentation because you are disrespectful and loose-tongued, you show up and we are going to break your mother,” said the sign signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Given the threats, the mayor of Tijuana, Monserrat Caballero, confirmed that the concert was canceled by the artist himself, who communicated the decision through an Instagram story on the profile of his record label, Double P Records. “Our goal is to protect the fans and the team. For the safety of everyone involved, we will cancel our show in Tijuana,” the statement says.
Security measures
The artist of the corridos tumbados seems to have hired a specialized group that accompanies him everywhere and has been called “The 12 Apostles.” The singer also travels in armored vehicles and wears a bulletproof vest valued at 70 thousand Mexican pesos (more than 15 million Colombian pesos).
No threat is minor nor does any measure seem to be sufficient, since it is not the first time that in Mexico, drug traffickers threaten and comply, murdering renowned artists of this popular music. The most remembered cases are those of Valentín Elizalde and Chalino Sánchez.
The cases of Chalino and Valentín
Rosalino Sánchez Félix, better known as Chalino Sánchez, the King of the corridos, was murdered on May 16, 1992. His body, which had been shot twice in the head, was blindfolded, and had his wrists and ankles tied, was found by peasants in a water canal near the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa. He was 31 years old.
One day before, on May 15, Chalino sang in Sinaloa, and apparently, in the middle of the performance, he received a note threatening his life. Despite that, Chalino finished the concert. Upon leaving the place, he was intercepted by a convoy of trucks with armed people who posed as police officers and asked Chalino to accompany them to speak with a commander. He accepted and nothing was heard from him once more until the next day, when the peasants found his body.
Valentín Elizalde, also known as the Golden Rooster, was murdered in Reynosa on November 25, 2006. His death is surrounded by mystery, but it is known that he was shot following leaving the concert he gave at the Expo-Feria in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. . He was 27 years old.
Among the rumors, it is said that his death had to do with the first song he sang that morning: “To my enemies.” The song, which was also one of the favorites of his followers, is said to hide among his verses a message from Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán to his opponents, Los Zetas.
“The dogs keep barking/A sign that I’m moving forward/That’s what the saying goes/For those who are talking/About the people who work/And who don’t hesitate/For those who didn’t get the bag/Ask for it to suit you/Not with me “They are playing/Why do they risk their lives?” says the song.
Upon getting off the stage, and following taking photos and handing out autographs to her fans, Elizalde boarded a black van. He was accompanied by his representative Mario Mendoza Grajeda, the driver Reynaldo Ballesteros and his cousin Fausto “Tano” Elizalde.
As soon as they began to advance, they were intercepted by two vehicles that blocked their path and from which a group of armed men got out and, without saying anything, unloaded two assault rifles and a pistol on the occupants of the truck. Around 60 bullets hit the truck and the body of Valentín Elizalde, who was shot in the extremities, torso and head. AK-47, AR-15 and .38 super shell casings were found at the scene. The only survivor was his cousin Fausto, whom he has accused of participating in the attack.
