HUNDREDS of hectares of rice fields in Klaten Regency, Central Java, experienced crop failure due to drought. The condition of the rice fields that failed to harvest was spread across the Bayat and Cawas Districts.

Head of the Klaten Food Security and Agriculture Service (DKPP), Widiyanti, revealed that the area of failed rice fields in the two sub-districts totaled 333 hectares. The rice fields failed to harvest in the second planting season (MT).

“The crop failure in the two sub-districts was due to the rice fields lacking water. The crop failure in Bayat Sub-district was spread across 10 villages, while in Cawas Sub-district there were four villages. The total area of crop failure was 333 hectares,” he explained.

When met at the Klaten Regency hall, Monday (1/7), Widiyanti said the area of failed rice fields in Bayat District was 205 hectares spread across 10 villages, and in Pedan District 148 hectares covering four villages.

The MT II rice fields are dry, especially in rain-fed areas. For irrigation of the fields, the Klaten DKPP has tried pumping, especially in areas with water sources, such as rivers.

“It should be noted that some farmers in Klaten Regency whose rice fields were destroyed by drought have participated in rice farming insurance (AUTP), and their claims are now in process,” said the Head of the Klaten DKPP.
