CAIRO (AP) — A drone attack on an open market in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, killed at least 23 people, activists and medical workers said, as fighting between the army and a powerful paramilitary group for control from the country.
At least three dozen people were wounded in the attack in Khartoum’s May neighborhood, according to an activist group known as Resistance Committees and two health workers at Bashair University Hospital, where the victims were treated.
The activist group posted images on social media showing bodies wrapped in white sheets in an outdoor courtyard at the hospital.
It was initially unclear which side was responsible for Sunday’s attack.
Sudan has been immersed in violence since mid-April, when tensions between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary contingent under the command of General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, led to open fighting.
Since then, fighting has spread to several parts of the country and reduced Khartoum to an urban battlefield.
In the western region of Darfur — where a genocidal campaign occurred in the early 2000s — the conflict has taken the form of ethnic violence, with the FAR and allied Arab militias attacking ethnic African groups, according to rights groups and United Nations.
The conflict has left more than 4,000 dead, according to United Nations figures from August. However, the real figure is almost certainly much higher, according to doctors and activists.
Some five million people have been displaced within Sudan or have fled the country to escape violence according to the International Organization for Migration.
