At Shirome Senmaida, a tourist destination in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, cracks can be seen in the rice fields and footpaths. The latest drone footage reveals the full extent of the damage and a glimpse of recovery.
■The current state of the fishing port in the disaster-stricken area as seen by drone
One month has passed since the earthquake, and how has the town changed? On the 30th, we took pictures from above with a drone.
Enome fishing port is located on Noto Island in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. A video taken by a viewer a few years ago shows a crystal clear sea. And I saw a number of fishing boats lined up.
Image taken on the 30th. If you look closely, you can see that the fishing port was cracked by the recent earthquake, and some of the surrounding houses had their roofs severely collapsed, and some were completely destroyed.
Drones can reveal damage in areas that cannot be seen from the ground. In Kumano Town, Wajima City, a “sand dam” was created when a river was blocked by a landslide.
A town that has changed. You can see that a U-shaped road used to run through the middle of the village. Houses at the foot of the mountain are also underwater.
In Wajima City, more than 10 such earth and sand dams have been constructed.
■“Shiromai Senmaida” seen from a drone
Many tourist destinations are more untouched. Shirome Senmaida is one of Wajima City’s representative tourist spots. Due to the earthquake, its shape has collapsed, and there are cracks in the rice fields and footpaths.
Before the earthquake, it looked like a thousand rice fields beautifully lined up in a staircase pattern. Rice fields that spread out like the sea. You can see that the water has receded due to this earthquake.
In the fall, the rice terraces are decorated with fantastic illuminations, and when the weather gets colder, they are covered in snow, delighting tourists. In the past, the voices of children enjoying rice planting might be heard here.
The water in the rice fields at that location had also disappeared due to the recent earthquake.
According to Wajima City, the top priority is to rebuild the lives of residents, and they say they don’t even know the extent of the damage to Senmaida.
Last summer, the sumo hall in Anamizu Town was crowded with foreign tourists. You can see that the roof has bent due to this earthquake. When I went to the back of the sumo hall… There were also landslides.
■“Untouched site” seen with a drone
Suzu City suffered major damage. Footage taken by a drone on the 29th shows collapsed earth and sand approaching a residential area. The coastline is lined with steep cliffs, and landslides occur here and there.
Drone footage taken by a viewer five years ago shows Route 249 originally running along the coastline, and the location of the tunnel is clearly visible.
However, following the earthquake, the mountain surface has collapsed to the point where you can’t even tell where the roads are running.
National Route 249 continues to be closed in parts. On the 30th, the reporting team headed to the scene via a detour.
■“Strange rock, Godzilla Rock” seen with a drone
Godzilla Rock is one of Noto’s famous spots. This place suddenly became famous following Hideki Matsui, a native of Ishikawa, nicknamed it Godzilla.
The sight of Godzilla floating in the Sea of Japan at sunset is like a flame-breathing Godzilla. However, on the 30th, the seawater that had spread around Godzilla’s feet disappeared, and it became connected to land.
According to the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, Suzu City was uplifted by up to 2 meters.
According to research conducted by the Geographical Society of Japan, the coastline from Suzu City to Shiga Town is moving offshore in an area of regarding 90 kilometers due to the earthquake.
When will people return to tourist spots?
