DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP).— A Hezbollah drone attack on an army base in central Israel killed four soldiers and seriously wounded seven others yesterday, military sources reported.
It is Hezbollah’s deadliest attack since Israel launched its ground invasion of Lebanon almost two weeks ago.
The military statement was issued shortly after Israel’s national rescue service indicated that 61 people were injured in the drone attack.
Previously, Lebanon-based Hezbollah claimed responsibility and said the attack on the base near the town of Binyamina was in retaliation for the Israeli offensive against Beirut on Thursday, in which 22 people were killed.
Due to Israel’s advanced anti-aircraft systems, it is unusual for so many people to be injured by drones or missiles. Israeli media reported that two drones were launched from Lebanon, and the armed forces indicated that one of them was intercepted.
This is the second time in two days that a drone has carried out an attack in Israel. On Saturday, during the Israeli holiday of Yom Kippur, a drone hit a Tel Aviv suburb, causing damage but no injuries.
The latest attack comes on the same day the US announced it was sending a new air defense system to Israel to bolster its anti-missile protection.
