Driving through red traffic lights will cost 1000 euros in the future in the Czech Republic

Anyone who is caught in traffic violations while driving in the Czech Republic will have to dig deeper into their pockets in the future. President Petr Pavel signed an amendment to the law in Prague on Wednesday, which will come into force on January 1, 2024. A fine of up to 25,000 crowns (around 1,000 euros) is threatened for driving through a red traffic light – five times more than before.

The maximum amount of fines for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving at speeds of 50 km/h outside and 40 km/h inside built-up areas and ignoring the red light at level crossings has also increased to 25,000 crowns. In addition, there are points in the Czech traffic register. Anyone who refuses an alcohol or drug test will have to pay the equivalent of up to 3,100 euros in the future.

In the event of an accident, the penalty is doubled

What is new is that the maximum fine can be doubled if an accident is also caused. In the future, those who block a tram with their wrongly parked car will be asked to pay more. From 2024 onwards, anyone who makes an emergency stop with their car will have to wear a high-visibility vest not only outside of built-up areas, but also inside towns and communities.

150 km/h in Südböhmen

The amendment to the law makes it possible to increase the maximum speed on selected modernized motorway sections from 130 to 150 kilometers per hour. However, this is only planned on several dozen kilometers of route that are to be specially signposted, for example on a section of the D3 motorway in southern Bohemia.
