Driving like playing the lottery: Everything is possible with the Jeep Grand Cherokee

2023-05-29 22:00:00

Now the Grand Cherokee comes as a plug-in hybrid.

What began in 1992 with a spectacular debut at the Detroit show is now being experienced by the fifth generation: The Grand Cherokee, the top model from the all-wheel drive pioneer Jeep, comes with new architecture and body, has been refined in terms of design and technology and is now also electrified.

With the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the Americans (with Italian relatives) round off the range of plug-in models that already includes the Renegade, Compass and Wrangler.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: New family SUV capabilities with off-road benefits

For a family SUV with the benefits of an off-road vehicle, there are now enhanced capabilities such as Quadra Lift, an air suspension with electronic, semi-active damping for more ground clearance (up to 278 millimeters) and 610 millimeters fording depth. In the Trailhawk version, the front anti-roll bar, which can be electrically decoupled, is used for the first time, offering even more traction on rocks and in difficult terrain. The two 4×4 systems Quadra-Trac II and Quadra Drive II with rear electronic locking differential form the basis for excellent off-road characteristics. The driving modes Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow and Mud/Sand can be selected via Selec Terrain.

The most important novelty: Grand Cherokee as a plug-in hybrid

The most important innovation, however, is the drive system with 380 hp and 645 Newton meters of torque. The two-liter turbo petrol engine with direct injection and the electric motor, fed by a 17.3 kWh battery, are combined here, the transmission is an eight-speed automatic. Up to 48 kilometers can be covered electrically, in the city up to 51. The high-voltage electronics are of course sealed watertight. The plug-in hybrid has a total weight of 2.3 tons.

The infotainment takes care of the UConnect system with 10.1-inch screen and 10.25-inch instrument display with over-the-air updates. A passenger screen and head-up display are also available. The list of safety features is complete, should include 110 details (we didn’t count) – in any case, level two is possible autonomously, 360-degree all-round visibility and a night camera help in terrain. Four configurations are available now: Limited (starting at 79,800 euros), Trailhawk (86,800), Overland (88,800) and Summit Reserve (99,500).
