Drinking latte may prevent body inflammation, study suggests

A new experiment carried out by the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark, suggests that the popular café au lait may have an anti-inflammatory effect in humans. The survey was published last Monday (1/30).

Combining the polyphenols found in coffee, which is rich in antioxidants, with the amino acids in milk can duplicate the anti-inflammatory properties of immune cells, according to the scientists.

To investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of combining polyphenols with milk proteins, the researchers caused artificial inflammation in immune system cells.

Some of the cells received multiple doses of polyphenols that reacted with the milk amino acid, while others received only non-reacting polyphenols. Another control group received nothing.

The researchers observed that immune cells treated with the combination of polyphenols and amino acids were twice as effective at fighting inflammation as cells that only had polyphenols added.

They believe that the mixture of coffee and milk may have a beneficial effect on inflammation in humans, but initially they should follow the investigation only in animals.

According to the researchers, few previous studies have analyzed what happens in the interaction of polyphenols with other molecules. They also believe that the potentially beneficial anti-inflammatory reaction can occur when other foods composed of proteins and fruits or vegetables (the latter two also rich in polyphenols) are combined.
