The dumping of plastic waste in nature is responsible for the destruction of many ecosystems. Thus, many people have swapped disposable bottles for reusable plastic bottles. Only, Danish researchers indicate that this type of bottle might be dangerous for health.
Unsuspected substances found in the composition of water
Two researchers from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark conducted a study published in the scientific journal Journal of Hazardous Materials on reusable plastic bottles. The latter filled several different water bottles with water (new, used, put in the dishwasher or with an extra rinse). After 24 hours, they analyzed the composition of the water contained in the various containers.
Results: they detected more than 400 compounds related to plastic and more than 3,500 substances derived from products used in dishwashers. While much of these substances are still unknown, researchers seem concerned regarding the presence of diethyltoluamide in the water, a powerful repellent found in mosquito sprays.
However, the presence of photoinitiators is even more to be feared. These are the compounds used in the ink of many types of food packaging, which are known to be carcinogenic or considered endocrine disruptors.
The effects of these substances on health are still unknown
The authors of the study point out that some substances found in water are intentionally added to the composition of plastics. On the other hand, others are formed during the production process or during the use of reusable bottles. The most toxic substances were found in particular following going through the dishwasher.
Scientists note “Just because these substances are in the water doesn’t mean the water is toxic and affects us humans. But the problem is that we don’t know. And in principle, it is not good to drink soap residue or other chemicals. They therefore recommend the use of glass bottles instead of reusable plastic bottles.
