The 48-year-old man vomited blood 3 times, even following being admitted to the hospital he continued to vomit blood due to alcohol abuse.

On January 19, Doctor Nguyen Anh Dung, Department of Emergency Medicine, Quang Thanh General Hospital, Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province said that the unit had just treated a TCD patient (48 years old, Quynh Luu district). Vomiting blood due to alcohol abuse.

The patient was admitted to the hospital at 9:18 am on January 18, in a critical condition, pale skin, weak pulse, deep drop in blood pressure, hemorrhagic shock. The doctor diagnosed the patient with gastrointestinal bleeding due to alcohol abuse.

The patient’s family said that the patient continuously drank alcohol and vomited blood 3 times, so he went to the doctor. The patient also had a long history of alcoholism.

After the consultation, the doctors performed emergency endoscopic intervention to stop bleeding for the patient. “If not treated promptly, the patient is at risk of cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, death due to blood loss,” the doctor said.

Fortunately, the man was awake and out of danger. However, the patient still has to continue treatment and continuous monitoring, according to the protocol in the emergency room.

Doctor Dung recommends that, to prevent gastrointestinal bleeding, people should not drink alcohol, smoke too much, especially strong alcohol. Do not use drugs and foods that are harmful to the stomach, should eat more fiber and vegetables to make the stomach work better.

In case of having to drink alcohol, it is best not to drink more than two units of alcohol per day for men, one unit of alcohol for women and no more than 5 days per week. Accordingly, one unit of alcohol is equivalent to regarding 3/4 of a beer bottle or can with a capacity of 330 ml (5%); a glass of wine 100 ml (13.5%) or a cup of spirits 30 ml (40%).

For patients who are undergoing treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding, it is necessary to use soft foods, divided 4-5 meals a day. People should eat a lot of foods containing starch and minerals such as rice, noodles, potatoes and a variety of ripe fruits, vegetables, milk. Avoid eating sour fermented foods, eating a lot of salt, hot spicy foods and carbonated soft drinks.
