Dresden: Dangerous storms on Sunday – weather service warns – T-Online

Heavy rain and lightning spoil Sunday evening: The weather service warned of severe weather in and around Dresden. A city festival also had to be cancelled.

Heavy rainfall hit Saxony on Sunday evening: The district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains subsequently warned that the rainfall could lead to flooding of streets, aquaplaning and even landslides in Kreischa. The warning was finally lifted during the night.

According to a reporter on site, State Road 183 in Lockwitzgrund between Sobrigau and Hummelmühle was blocked by mud, rubble and tree trunks in the evening. Volunteer firefighters cleared the road, which had to be closed for several hours due to the storm.

The German Weather Service (DWD) had predicted heavy rain of between 30 and 40 litres of rain per square metre per hour in Dresden and the south of the city in the evening hours. Along the border with the Czech Republic, heavy rain warnings were also issued in Chemnitz and Bautzen.

In Dresden, the city festival “Canaletto” was cancelled on Sunday afternoon after it had already been interrupted several times due to the first storms. Read more about it here.

The Dresden fire brigade was out on Sunday due to around 180 weather-related operations; at around 6 p.m., 100 operations were still open. In the east of the city in particular, the fire brigade had to respond to flooded cellars, garages and streets. A tram and bus stop were also temporarily blocked by the floods. There have been no reports of injuries so far.
