Dream Jobs of Generation Z Revealed in Instagram Survey

The Dream Jobs of Generation Z: A Cheeky Peek into Their Aspirations!

A recent Instagram survey of the infamous Generation Z has revealed what these digital-savvy youngsters aspire to be. Spoiler alert: it’s not rocket science – literally. According to a study conducted by the search engine of courses at Class Central, the top position on their wish list is none other than – drumroll, please – modeling.

The Top Picks: Glamour, Creativity, and Filters

Following our future runway stars, we have the delightful artists who are adept at throwing paint on walls and significantly impacting household walls’ value. Coming in at a close second is the artist, with photographer beautifully snapping away in third. The list continues with roles that reflect a penchant for creativity and social media prowess: makeup artist, blogger, marketer, singer, and personal trainer

The Numbers Game: Hashtags They Love

This list isn’t just plucked from thin air; it’s been pulled from a staggering 380 million Instagram posts using career-related hashtags. Now, if you think that’s impressive, try telling your parents that #modellife is now more popular than #doctor or #engineer. Sorry, Dad!

Traditional Jobs in the Shadow

Now, don’t start feeling too despondent if you’re a traditionalist. Jobs like doctor (24th), engineer (30th), and even an astronaut (47th!) are still making appearances, although not quite as frequent as those posts of avocado toast. Is there even an award for the most disrespected job title? Because I think we’ve found a winner. The study claims this highlights Generation Z’s magnetic attraction to the realms of creativity and the glamorous, Instagram-filtered lives of influencers.

Reality Check from the Real World

However, hold your horses! A separate survey – and this is critical – conducted by BBC Bitesize Careers on around 4,000 teenagers reveals that when asked about their dream jobs, they were still keen on more traditional careers. In that survey, the beloved doctor sparkled at the top of the list, with engineer and teacher snapping at its heels. It’s almost as if teenagers have noticed there’s a world beyond the page of their Instagram feeds!

Dhawal Shah Has His Say

Dhawal Shah, CEO of Class Central, aptly sums it up: “This study shows that Generation Z is attracted to jobs that are located in the most creative industries, especially those that have become heavily intertwined with social media.” Remarkable! Someone must have told him that TikTok isn’t a reliable career guide! But here lies a critical question: are they *seriously* contemplating careers, or just tossing hashtags around like confetti?

The Bottom Line

So, what’s the takeaway here? Perhaps it’s that Generation Z, while gravitating towards creative and influencer careers, still has a soft spot for more traditional jobs. A vindicating thought for anyone still studying for their engineering degree! Will we see a world where hashtags reign, but the relevance of traditional professions can’t be entirely thwarted? Only time (and maybe a few more surveys) will tell!

A recent survey targeting Generation Z conducted through Instagram has unveiled insights into the most coveted career aspirations of this age group. The study, undertaken by the leading class search engine Class Central, highlighted that among individuals born between 1997 and 2012, pursuing a career in modeling stands out as the top choice.

Following closely, the role of an artist is ranked second, while photography takes the third spot. This is succeeded by professions such as makeup artist, blogger, marketer, singer, and personal trainer.

This comprehensive ranking was derived through meticulous analysis of career-oriented hashtags on Instagram, utilizing tags like #journalist, #paramedic, and #model, alongside related phrases such as #modellife and #modelagency, which appeared in an astounding 380 million Instagram posts, leading to a clear ranking among desired professions.

After personal trainer, the remaining positions in the top 20 most sought-after jobs include actor, influencer, style blogger, dancer, chef, writer, YouTuber, fashion designer, content creator, athlete, hairstylist, and nail artist.

GENERATION Z INCLUDES CREATIVE JOBS

Notably, traditional roles like doctor were surprisingly relegated to 24th place with just over 18 million hashtags, engineer landed at 30th with 7.6 million, lawyer took the 32nd spot with 6.5 million, and astronaut was placed at 47th with a mere 2.5 million hashtags.

“This study illustrates that Generation Z is drawn more towards career paths in the creative industries, especially those that have become inseparably linked with social media, including blogging and influencing,” commented Dhawal Shah, CEO of Class Central.

“While there is a prevailing belief that Generation Z exclusively aspires to be influencers and content creators, the findings show a continued interest in careers demanding practical skills. For instance, professions such as streamer and soccer player are favored over more traditional careers like architect and chef.”

The study focuses on sorting work-related hashtags on Instagram; however, it’s noteworthy that some uses of these hashtags may not directly indicate a desire to pursue careers in those fields. Furthermore, it’s essential to recognize that the entire Instagram user base does not consist solely of Generation Z.

As per Statista, despite Generation Z, characterized by individuals born between 1997 and 2012 (now aged between 12 and 27 in 2024), comprising a significant segment of Instagram users, over 25-year-olds account for more than two-thirds of the platform’s demographic.

MODEL, ACTOR OR ENGINEER

A survey encompassing approximately 4,000 adolescents aged 13 to 16 in the UK, executed late last year by BBC Bitesize Careers, indicated that doctor ranked as the most favored profession, with one in ten teenagers expressing this preference. Following doctors were engineers in the second position, teachers third, lawyers in fourth, and nurses rounding out the top five.

This suggests that despite the prominence of hashtags like #model and #actor in social media discourse, young individuals still express genuine interest in more traditional roles, alongside careers that have arisen in the new media landscape they have grown up in.

“Contrary to popular belief, this study highlights that Generation Z maintains a strong attraction towards traditional professions like doctors, nurses, teachers, and dentists, which appear in the top 25 desired occupations,” Shah noted.

“It is intriguing to observe how social media has influenced the career choices of younger generations and whether conventional job roles will gradually descend further in the rankings as time progresses,” he added. N
