Draymond Green’s Future: Will Golden State Retain the Star Veteran in Free Agency?

2022-11-04 07:00:00

If the results are not exciting at the start of the season with the Warriors (9 games, 6 losses including 4 in a row in progress), business is business. And while waiting for the balance sheet to be better in Golden State, a question begins to heat up among some: what will happen to Draymond Green, probable free agent this summer?

We love it, we hate it, but its importance is undeniable.

Cornerstone of the Warriors defense, veteran leader with an overpowering voice, motivational teammate and sometimes a little too… rough, Draymond Green is Draymond Green. A quadruple NBA champion, a future Hall of Famer, a player who will have his jersey retired at the Chase Center and who will go down in the history of this wonderful sport. But do you know what Draymond Green will be too? Free agent this summer. Or at least, we can strongly assume so.

With a contract year of 26 million this season and a player option at 27 million and dust for the NBA season 2023-24, many people think they will see the strong winger arrive on the market in July 2023, with the firm intention of signing a new beautiful contract. So far, nothing out of the ordinary, you might say. And in the hearts of the Warriors, fans and decision makers of the franchise, the desire to keep it is as shared as it is obvious. So far, nothing out of the ordinary as well, you will tell us.

which did not prevent Zach Lowe to revisit the Draymond Green dossier in a long format chez ESPNand add a touch of information with sources.

If this is really a “Last Dance” season for the 3-5 Warriors (and that’s not a sure thing by any stretch), I’m going to spend a lot of it thinking regarding Draymond Green:

— Zach Lowe (@ZachLowe_NBA) November 3, 2022

The Warriors have not engaged in any transfer talks centered around Draymond Green, nor do they currently intend to..”

We see it coming with big ones: duhobviously they’re not going to do that.

Yes, the obvious seems in order, except that it’s not as if the player’s situation and that of the Warriors were impeccable on all fronts, in the short, medium and long term. We’re talking regarding a franchise that already has nearly $200 million in committed salaries for the 2023-24 season, we’re talking regarding a franchise that recently extended Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole. We are talking regarding a player in Draymond Green who has seen his level of play drop over the years, of a leader who has beaten his own teammate in the middle of training camp, and who has surfed on the acceptable more than once even if it means putting his family in danger. We are talking regarding an institution in Golden State who wants to continue winning titles, and who will also have to look into the Klay Thompson file soon, contractually speaking.

The idea here is not to imagine a world in which Draymond Green is floating around in rumors of the next trade deadline, that would seem totally crazy and premature. The idea here, and it is in this sense that Zach Lowe notably made his little joker, is to position himself well in advance, in case something dramatic were to happen.

Does Golden State want to keep Draymond, and if so for how much?

Does Draymond want to continue at Golden State, and if so for how much?

It will soon be time for discussions, and a decision will have to be made. Because if the management of the Warriors does not reassure Green regarding their intentions this summer, what will appear as a poor rumor from the beginning of November will turn into a real beacon call made several months in advance.

Draymond Green and the Warriors, the case rolls and should roll long-term. But what will happen this summer, if Draymond becomes a free agent? Will Golden State keep him, and how big will the contract be? The debates are launched, to you the keyboards.
