The Drasop bridge, which spans the Brussels ring road at Halle, will be demolished during the night of Saturday September 23 to Sunday September 24, the Flemish traffic agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer) announced on Tuesday. The section of the ring between the Huizingen (n°20) and Hal (n°21) exits will be completely closed from 9:00 p.m. until Sunday morning. The agency advises road users to avoid the western part of the ring, or to pass through Tervuren or Waterloo.
A truck loaded with paper hit the underside of the bridge in August 2019. The vehicle caught fire and damaged one of the bridge’s steel beams. Since the accident, the latter has been closed to traffic.
The traffic agency will now proceed with the replacement of the Drasop Bridge. A renovation would not only be more expensive, but also less durable, according to her. The new structure will have two lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, each 2.5 meters wide. A 3 meter wide lane for cars is planned in the middle of the road, motorists will have to cross the bridge in turns.
During the work which will be carried out at the end of September, no traffic will be possible on the Brussels ring road from and to Hal/Ittre/Tournai and from and to Huizingen/Beersel. The Huizingen access and exit ramps will, however, remain accessible for traffic coming from and going to Brussels, while the Halle ramps will be accessible for traffic coming from and going to Ittre.
