This Tuesday’s duel between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, the first between them during Spring Training 2024, had an outcome marked by an unusual play in which Yankees catcher Ben Rortvedt allowed a couple of key runs in the end for the 5-4 victory of those from Queens.

The Yankees tried to overcome a five-run deficit that came thanks to a rally by the Mets in the third inning and that It featured, in addition to the Rortvedt episode, a Dantesque 355-foot home run by Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor.

With Lindor’s home run, the second of the training camps, it seemed that the Metros’ threat had ended but Francisco Álvarez’s base hit and Brett Baty’s single placed both of them at third and second base respectively.

The striking thing came later when former Yankee Harrison Bader was in the batter’s box. One pitch from pitcher Harrison Cohen was enough for Rortvedt committed a passed ball but in an unusual way there was no reaction at any time.

As the play showed Rortvedt did not notice the situation at any time, without knowing where the ball was.which allowed Álvarez and Baty to reach the plate without problems.

The two lines of difference were fundamental in the game, which although it was met with a rally by the Yankees of three runs in the fifth and one more in the 8th for the attempted reaction, was the victim of the error that ultimately led to the defeat of the Mules.

With the victory, the Mets evened their record at five wins and five losses in Spring Training, in a record that is curiously equal to those of their rivals (5-5).
