With a 0-0 following 90 minutes of play, the two teams had to decide on penalties with a huge miss from Teboho Mokoena for the first South African attempt while Samuel Moutoussamy gave the Congolese the advantage.
Chancel Mbemba (ex-Anderlecht) had the match ball at the tip of his foot but his shot on goal was saved by the South African goalkeeper. The latter did not tremble and made the decisive save on Elia’s attempt.
On the DR Congo side, Theo Bongonda started but was replaced while Joris Kayembe (Genk) played the entire match.
This is the 4th time that South Africa has reached the CAN podium. African champions in 1996, Bafana Bafana reached the final in 1998 and took 3rd place in 2000.
