The emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were alerted on Saturday, around 4:30 am, that a serious traffic accident had occurred in the Marquain interchange (Tournai). This interchange connects the A17 Mouscron-Tournai motorway and the E403 Lille-Tournai. A SMUR, an ambulance, an extrication vehicle, a beaconing truck and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene.
For a reason that the investigation will have to try to determine, the driver of a car traveling in the Mouscron-Tournai direction missed the bend in the interchange. “After hitting the safety barriers, the vehicle rolled over several times and ended its course in the trees located below the highway. When the emergency services arrived, the driver and his passenger were already dead”, explains the Lieutenant Harold Vasken who led the intervention. The two young victims were on board a BMW registered in Belgium. The damaged car is the only cause.
